Men have embraced plastic surgery as a way to keep looking their best. A desire for self-improvement that is driven by competition in the workplace and the prevailing youth culture has resulted in men becoming an increasingly common presence in the plastic surgeon's office. From treating facial aging to improving body contours the many surgical and nonsurgical options now available have attracted an increasingly diverse group of men in all age groups.

Men are seeking out procedures such as neuromodulators like Botox® Cosmetic to treat wrinkles, injectable fillers to restore volume, and energy devices to tighten, lift, and smooth the skin. Surgical procedures that make them look younger, more rested, and more representative of how they actually feel include the treatment of baggy eyelids, nasal appearance, excess neck, hip, and abdominal fat, and gynecomastia or male breast enlargement. The minimal downtime procedures performed today make their acceptance amongst busy professional men and women very high. A common comment that is heard from many men is “make me look better but don't make it look obvious.” Dr. Forley's approach, in over 23 years of practice, has always been to keep it natural and nonsurgical looking for both men and women.

Fortunately, technology has advanced to the point that we are now able to offer multiple options that enable us to find the perfect fit for every patient. Making the correct diagnosis and offering the appropriate treatment is as important in plastic surgery as in any other medical specialty. Dr. Forley will devote as much time as needed during your initial office visit to determine treatment choices that will best address the issues that are of greatest concern to you.

Botox® Cosmetic injections provide a non-surgical way of reversing some of the visible signs of aging. Crow's feet, laugh lines, and frown lines are caused by the repetitive contraction of underlying facial muscles. Dynamic lines occur with every smile, laugh, or frown. These can lead to wrinkles that are present when you are not expressing emotion. Botox® Cosmetic works by blocking the nerve impulses to the wrinkle producing muscles so they do not contract. The overlying skin will be smooth and unwrinkled. The untreated muscles will allow for normal facial expression to remain unaffected.

Minimally invasive or non-surgical treatments of varying degrees of complexity are being done earlier to achieve a desired appearance, to maintain a youthful look, and to avoid the more drastic changes of cosmetic surgery after significant aging changes have already progressed. In this manner we can maintain a consistently rejuvenated face for longer. The goal of cosmetic procedures should be to achieve a natural looking, aesthetically appealing appearance without the telltale signs of intervention.

The Selective Waveband Technology (SWT) that is unique to the Nordlys system enables the treatment of a broad range of frequently encountered skin disorders using light energy. Precise energy pulses are used to deliver only those wavelengths beneficial to the treatment of brown pigmentation and red vascular skin conditions such as rosacea. The targeted sites of skin discoloration are “energized” by the pulsed heat, causing them to lighten and dissipate usually within 1-3 monthly sessions.

Skin tightening without surgery is possible with the new InMode RF system that utilizes bipolar radio-frequency energy to achieve a lifting of sagging tissues. The FaceTite & BodyTite applicators only require a needle entry point to be positioned immediately below the skin. A painless gliding movement of the applicator, under local anesthesia, delivers controlled heating of the fibrous bands attached to the undersurface of the skin as well as the external skin surface. The treatment initiates a process that can produce surgery-like lifting results over 3-6 months with no scars.

Loose, sagging, and bulging tissues of the eyelids can make the eyes appear smaller and lead others to ask if you are tired or stressed. In some men, a low lying brow bone accentuates the appearance of heaviness and skin excess that develops over time. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery treats the excess loose skin and fatty tissue that produces sagging and heaviness of the upper or lower eyelids. In some cases, the fat is used to fill the hollow or deep circle that develops at the junction of the eyelid and cheek as we age. The eyes will appear larger, less tired, more open, and brighter following the surgical procedure.

The appearance of the nose that is of concern to men most often includes a bump on the nasal bridge, a prominent or broad nasal tip, or a crooked nasal appearance after sports related trauma. Natural appearing results are achieved by improving the problem areas while preserving an aesthetic balance with the rest of your face. 3-D imaging is used by Dr. Forley to help you visualize the potential outcome of the surgery.

Liposuction is a contouring procedure that removes bulges to achieve a more aesthetic blending of body outlines. The type of physical appearance men desire can be counteracted by age, heredity, lack of exercise, and poor eating habits. Long lasting results are achieved when surgery is combined with a program of fitness and nutrition. Liposuction removes excess localized fat deposits through tiny incisions using small tubes or cannulas. The overlying skin contracts to fit the new profile. In some cases, the BodyTite™ radiofrequency energy skin tightening procedure can be utilized to treat skin laxity that may accompany the excess fat. In large volume weight loss patients, an excisional approach is required to deal with skin redundancy due to loss of elasticity and tone. The neck, hips, and abdomen are the areas most often targeted in men.

Excessively large male breasts, known as gynecomastia, can produce a feeling of self-consciousness about body image that can inhibit lifestyle choices and daily activities. In most cases, the glandular and fatty tissue enlargement of the male breast begins during puberty. It is usually a benign condition, but can be associated with hormonal abnormalities that may need additional evaluation. Gynecomastia surgery improves the large breast size by reducing the volume and prominence of the breast fatty tissue using liposuction and directly removing excess glandular tissue via an incision at the lower edge of the areola. Skin excision is rarely needed, as it will generally retract during the healing phase. However, the BodyTite™ radiofrequency energy skin tightening procedure can be utilized to treat skin laxity with a non-excisional approach should it be necessary. In addition to the improved appearance, men also find they are comfortable participating in social or sports activities that they were either unable or unwilling to do before surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Forley will discuss and recommend those options that he feels will give you the best result.
