Laser Skin Resurfacing

The skin changes that occur as we age are a direct result of our history of sun exposure. The ultraviolet radiation to which the skin is exposed damages the collagen and elastic fibers that give the skin its youthful appearance. The result of this sun damage is wrinkled, dry, tired looking skin.

Recent technology has provided an antidote to the damage that is inflicted on the skin by the elements. The laser has been adapted to treat wrinkles and smooth out damaged, aged skin. The energy that is delivered by the laser is specifically absorbed by the water in the cells of the skin resulting in a destruction of the damaged cells and replacement or "resurfacing" with new dermal collagen and elastic fibers. In addition, skin shrinkage can be produced which gives a tighter "lifted" appearance to the face.

We have two lasers available to treat the skin. The carbon dioxide or CO2 laser is very effective for the most severely damaged types of skin. It provides a very effective way to treat not only the wrinkles and superficial pigmentation spots of the skin but also produces a significant tightening effect. This laser requires about 12 days for the skin to heal. There is a pink to red tone to the skin that will last for about 2-3 months with use of this laser. This can be easily covered with a camouflage makeup.

The Erbium laser is a newly developed type of laser that allows for faster healing and less redness. The skin heals within one week and the redness lasts for only about 3-4 weeks. This laser is most effective for superficial to moderate depth wrinkles found in younger age groups.

The laser procedure can be used to treat specific areas of the face such as the crow's feet around the eyes, the forehead, the wrinkles around the mouth, or the entire face. It is also a nice addition to facial surgery to enhance the final result after facelift and eyelid surgery. The procedure is usually performed using local anesthesia that can be supplemented with additional sedation if so desired.
